11. 'Fives and Twenty-Fives,' by Michael Pitre

Debut author Pitre tells the story of a road repair platoon in Iraq. Platoon members include its leader, an insecure lieutenant; a medic who joined the military because he wanted to advance but has now seen many comrades die; and an Iraqi interpreter who is torn between his adoration of American literature and music and his dislike of the US presence in his country. "The book is strangely funny," says Nelson.
