10 best books of July: the Monitor's picks

The Monitor's book critics give thumbs up to these 10 new July titles.

9. "A Wolf Called Romeo," by Nick Jans

Award-winning writer Nick Jans chronicles an improbable series of relationships between a wolf named Romeo and the humans and dogs of Juneau, Alaska. Perhaps lonely for his mate (who may or may not have been the female wolf accidentally killed by a taxicab), Romeo befriended humans and domestic dogs wherever he could. A long-time Alaska resident, Jans evokes the harsh beauties of the Alaskan wilderness in powerful and poetic prose, even as he meditates on the fraught relationship between humans and wolves.
