15. 'Half a Chance,' by Cynthia Lord

This is another winning middle-grade novel by Newbery Honor-winning author Cynthia Lord. In "Half a Chance," Lucy’s wandering father, a famous photographer, moves the family to New Hampshire just before going away on assignment. Back in her new home, Lucy contends with making new friends and developing her own interest in photography. Meanwhile, she befriends a boy called Nate whose grandmother is suffering from dementia. The book establishes a vivid sense of place and deals with difficult issues like dementia in a thoughtful and moving way. (Ages 8 to 12)
