"Eden" is a beautiful novel in verse about the period between 1942 and 1945 when the US government imprisoned more than 110,000 innocent Japanese-Americans on the West Coast. The narrator is young Janie, forcibly transported along with two generations of her family from their home in Idaho to Seattle, where they are forced to live in a camp surrounded by a wire fence. The book is an important and powerful work that should be on the reading lists of middle-grade educators and librarians. (Ages 11 to 15)
