5. ‘Go Tell It on the Mountain,’ by James Baldwin

James Baldwin’s semi-autobiographical novel follows the story of John Grimes, a 14-year-old boy who seeks to redefine the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a Pentecostal church in Harlem. The novel takes place in a single day in March of 1935, and it examines the role of the Christian church in the lives of African Americans.
