In debut author Scott's novel, midwife Elspeth returns to her home in nineteenth-century New York State to find her husband and four of her five remaining children dead. She and her remaining son set out to discover who committed the crime. "Along the way, they find out a lot of things about the family they came from that they didn't know," Nelson said of the book, calling it "atmospheric."
