4 fascinating audiobooks that look at the cost of war

Four audiobooks portray the ravages of World Wars I and II.

3. 'The Daughters of Mars,' by Thomas Keneally

Thomas Keneally (“Schindler’s List”) spins a tale of the trauma, suffering, and emotional upheaval experienced by those living through World War I. Nurse Naomi Durance and her younger sister Sally ship out of Australia at the beginning of the war, each sailing to different arenas and able to bring separate perspectives to the story, which – although sometimes slowed by too much detail – is ultimately quite moving. Jane Nolan, an Australian native with lovely diction, has a variety of voices and finely honed acting skills. She never overplays, which keeps the story from morphing into melodrama. Grade: B+
