5. Poppies to make them sleep

In Baum's original novel, when Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion fall asleep in the famous field of poppies, Dorothy is carried out by the Tin Man and the Scarecrow, while the Lion is removed by a cart pulled by many mice. This was first changed in a 1902 stage musical version of the show, which depicted Good Witch Glinda waking the sleepers by making it snow. This allowed the stage crew to get around the problem of creating a mouse cart onstage. The 1939 movie stuck with the snow plot device.
