"I was trying a homicide case in Los Angeles when news came to the judge that President Kennedy was assassinated. He stood up and said 'My God.' The jurors all stood up, some cried, and became hysterical.... I was still trying the homicide case when Earl Ruby, Jack's brother, came out to watch me on trial in court, and after watching for a day, came up and asked me if I would represent his brother."
