Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.
The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Conroy's novel "The Great Santini," believed to be largely autobiographical, introduced readers to fighter pilot Bull Meecham (apparently based on Conroy's father Donald) and the strained relationships Bull had with his family. Now the author's memoir tells the story of Conroy's father's final years and the changes in the relationship between Conroy and Donald Conroy. "Pat Conroy's a bighearted guy," says Nelson. "He's a great storyteller."
