10 best books of October: the Monitor's picks

Here are the 10 books Monitor critics liked best this month.

6. "Book of Ages," by Jill Lepore

In Book of Ages, New Yorker writer Jill Lepore presents the extraordinary history of the ordinary, everyday life of Benjamin Franklin’s opinionated kid sister Jane. Given the opportunity, Jane herself might have been another Benjamin Franklin. “Book of Ages” is an artful, serious, marvelous book about the younger Franklin's life and Lepore brings to it focus, intensity, and proud delight in her subject.
