10 best books of September: the Monitor's picks

Here are the 10 September books most recommended by the Monitor's book critics.

8. "Traveling Sprinkler," by Nicholson Baker

Nicholson Baker's wonderful 2009 novel "The Anthologist" featured fecklessly charming protagonist Paul Chowder, the unemployed poet who raised procrastination to an advanced art form. In "Traveling Sprinkler," Chowder is back, as entertaining as ever, although perhaps even more hopelessly lost as he attempts to lurch from poetry to songwriting. Chowder's lost love Roz reappears in this book as well, giving readers at least the hope that Chowder may – finally – do something right.
