6. 'A Special Gift for Grammy,' by Jean Craighead George

The role that natural objects play in our lives is explored from a completely different angle in "A Special Gift for Grammy." George, beloved for her wonderful stories of animals, here considers the marvel of some of nature’s inanimate creations. When young Hunter gives a stack of stones to his grandmother, he tells her that she’ll know what to do with them. And sure enough – every single one of them turns out to have a special purpose. Illustration team Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher also do a lovely job of telling this story through collage, acrylic, and pencil illustrations.
