When the writers first came up with the character of "Happy Homemaker" Sue Ann Nivens, they wrote that she was a "Betty White type." So casting director Ethel Winant suggested they try for White. However, White was best friends with Moore and the writers were reluctant to force Moore to mix her personal life with the show. But Moore agreed and so White appeared as Sue Ann. It quickly became clear that the part was a hit. "I've been waiting all my life for a part like this," White said.
