11. 'Southern Cross the Dog,' by Bill Cheng: Featured debut

As an eleventh bonus book, Amazon is also highlighting Cheng's debut novel, which centers on Robert Chatham, who lives through the Great Flood of 1927 but loses most of his possessions. In the aftermath of the flood, Robert embarks on a journey through the land around the Mississippi, where he encounters KKK members, brothels, refugee camps, and more. Nelson says she and her fellow editors compare the book to the works of Cormac McCarthy and Flannery O'Connor. "It's like a panorama of the South," she says of the novel.
