9. 'Scatter, Adapt, and Remember,' by Annalee Newitz

Newitz, the author of "Pretend We're Dead," says the Earth is long overdue for a massive catastrophe such as those which have nearly exterminated life on the planet in the past. When it comes, can humanity possibly survive? Yes, says Newitz, if we embrace certain scientific innovations. Nelson says the book is not for the faint of heart but compares its accessibility to "Future" by Jaron Lanier. "It has that sort of science-y, 'it's going to be homework' quality, but it's not," she says.
