7. 'A Curious Man,' by Neal Thompson

The biography by Thompson – who is also the author of works including "Driving with the Devil" – focuses on the life of Ripley's Believe It or Not! founder Robert Ripley. Ripley worked first as a cartoonist before launching the "Believe It or Not!" franchise that made him a millionaire. "He's such an interesting weirdo... he was Walt Disney before there was Walt Disney," Nelson says of Ripley. "[The book] is funny, it's odd."
