The author of "A Million Little Pieces" took some serious media flak for fabricating entire events in his bestselling "memoir." He appeared on "Oprah" twice: first for being selected for Oprah's book club, and second for a surprise hard-nosed interview asking about the lies in his book. (His publisher arrived thinking that they were to be a part of a discussion about "Truth in America" only to discover that the topic had been changed to "The James Frey Controversy").
Frey was eventually asked to write a disclaimer to be entered into the book acknowledging the embellishments.
Some of Frey's more recent work – including novels "Bright Shiny Morning" (2008) and "The Final Testament of the Holy Bible" (2011) – have received mixed reviews.
