'Never Look a Polar Bear in the Eye': 5 stories from a family's time near the Arctic

Zac Unger temporarily moved his family to Churchill, Manitoba, to experience life in the polar bear wild. Here are some of his stories from his book "Never Look a Polar Bear in the Eye."

Of the three children he brought along on his trip, Unger said they each had different views on the possibility of seeing a polar bear. "'Hold my hand tight so you don't get eaten,' I said to Percy, who somehow looked both stricken with fear and also utterly bored by the entire enterprise," he wrote. "She couldn't understand why somebody would want to go explore a bear-infested castle when you could be ensconced in a nest of sleeping bags with an Amelia Bedelia book and a box of Cheddar Goldfish. Mac, on the other hand, has always resented the fact that he is forced to sleep on sheets and pillows rather than pine needles and animal hides. 'Could we really get eaten?' he asked eagerly. 'Oh, absolutely,' I said, not wanting to disappoint. 'Do you know where your kidneys are? Bears like that part best.' I patted him in the appropriate spot, and he weighed the potential excitement of a bear attack against the value of an organ he'd only just learned he possessed."
