8. Armistead Maupin

"Long before I started writing, I enjoyed telling stories and holding the attention of an audience. Southerners tend to do that. By the time I was eight I was putting folk legends and ghost stories into my own words, telling them around the campfire at summer camp and on Boy Scout trips. I was lousy at sports, but I could keep the other kids on the edge of their logs. I think I learned to find my self-worth that way."
