As a heavily recruited high school star, West says a number of colleges tried to sign him up by offering him more money than his father had ever made. Perhaps the most memorable sales pitch, however, came from Texas A&M coach Kenny Loeffler, whose teary-eyed spiel included a promise that West would receive a car and exemption from military service, among other enticements.
