Doyle's name is recognizable around the world as the author of the famous Sherlock Holmes mysteries, but 'Dangerous Work' (University of Chicago Press, $35, 368 pp.) reveals a previously little-known aspect of the writer's life. The never-before-published work is a diary written by a young Doyle as he worked on a whaler in the Arctic and includes annotations to the text by two Doyle experts as well as four of Doyle's works that were inspired by his time among the ice.
