NaNoWriMo took place for the first time in July of 1999 in San Francisco and was attempted by writer Chris Baty and a group of 20 other people. In 2000, a website was set up and word spread between friends, with the number increasing to 140. In 2011, more than 36,000 writers reached the 50,000-word goal.
