8. 'Thomas Jefferson,' by Jon Meacham

"American Lion" author Meacham explores the life of the third president of the United States and his work as a philosopher as well as the contradictions in his life with regards to his attitude on slavery and other topics. "I think Thomas Jefferson is a remarkably complicated character," Nelson says. Meacham's strength, she notes, is writing "about these olden days in a voice and a style that doesn't make you feel like in history class."
