In 1962, Kennedy called to give his congratulations to Edmund "Pat" Brown, who won the race for governor of California, beating Richard Nixon. Nixon had just lost the race for the presidency to Kennedy in 1960 and gave a bitter concession speech, stating that "you won't have Nixon to kick around anymore, because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference." When Kennedy called Brown, he said, "You reduced him to the nuthouse." "You gave me instructions and I follow your orders," Brown replied. "But God, that last farewell speech of his...." said Kennedy. "I really think he's psychotic," Brown told the president. "He's an able man, but he's nuts." "Yeah," Kennedy agreed. Brown also put his son Jerry (then 24, but who would later become governor of California himself) on the phone to say hello to Kennedy.
