5. No patience for pain

Former Penn State players remembered Paterno having no patience for injuries (an attitude the coach also held for himself). "I got hurt once," former player Jack Curry said, "and I took so much abuse for it I swore I'd never get hurt again." One player, Lou Bartek, said almost no injuries got you out of practice. Even if someone couldn't be physically involved in the practice, the person would be put on the sideline with a red X over his jersey. "You felt like you were a casualty of war or something with the Red Cross," player Kenny Jackson said. "You didn't want to be over there."
