One day, Monroe arrived at Wright's house and asked him to design her a house. When asked what she had in mind, she detailed a massive, luxurious home. Wright agreed and found a plan he'd done earlier of a large manor house. But Arthur Miller, Monroe's husband at the time, didn't think they could afford all the features Monroe had asked for and told Wright that "we expected to live fairly simply and were not looking for some elaborate house with which to impress the world." Wright apparently pretended not to hear him and, when Miller went by to visit Wright several days later, he showed Miller the plan of a lavish house. Miller did not give Wright the go-ahead to proceed with the plan, and Miller and Monroe divorced four years later.
