"How to Be a Carioca" (1992) by Priscilla Ann Goslin is highly recommended for anyone who will spend any time in Rio de Janeiro. Goslin's "tongue-in-cheek" portrait of Caricoa (the word means "long time resident of Rio") culture rings true. Particularly valuable is her entertaining section devoted to the "essential vocabulary" of regional jargon.
