At one point, Zevin injured his anterior cruciate ligament and went to recuperate at his father's house because it had fewer stairs than his home. Beforehand, Zevin had had to undergo an operation. "Here's something that's starting to freak me out," he wrote. "My surgeon implanted 'donor tissue' in my knee. Donor tissue... So: who was he? Or: who was she?... I wonder what traits I'll inherit from her, this lady inside my knee. Hopefully, she'll know some foreign languages. Or she had a knack for fixing small appliances like the dead Dustbuster I hid in the hallway closet at home after it got clogged with Cheerios. Fingers crossed."
