Throughout his decades-long literary career, Carlos Fuentes produced more than 20 books. Here are five of his best.
This is perhaps Fuentes’s most respected novel and one considered to be a milestone in the Latin American literary movement. The novel follows the thoughts of Artemio Cruz, a powerful and corrupt soldier, politician, journalist, and lover, as he lays dying on his deathbed, immobilized and delirious, hovering between life and death. “The Death of Artemio Cruz” was dedicated to sociologist C. Wright Mills, a friend of Fuentes, and modeled partly on Orson Welles’s 1941 movie “Citizen Kane.”
