4. Grand Central Station

When Onassis read in newspapers about the possibility of Grand Central Station being altered, she called the Municipal Art Society to ask what she could do to help to prevent the renovation or rebuilding. She spoke with the executive director of the MAS, Kent Barwick, who told her he knew how busy her schedule must be and asked if they could send her staff a statement for approval. "I don't have a staff," Onassis told him. That wasn't entirely true, but Barwick was impressed nonetheless by Onassis's willingness to take the lead herself.
