Dan Johnson, a builder based in Florida who constructs many pools for homeowners, says that not only have home pools gotten more elaborate recently, they're also not actually being used for swimming, just floating around. "I'd guess less than 20 percent," Johnson told Sherr when asked to approximate how many homeowners swim in them. Johnson said benches are often put in the water, or sometimes bar stools, because the pool owners just want to lounge rather than exercising.
