Streep says her children weren't interested early on in watching her movies because they saw her acting parts as their mother behaving strangely. "They want me to be me – and not die – and I died in a lot of things, or fall down stairs, and things like that," she said. "But my son watched 'Out of Africa' when he was ten because I thought, 'I want him to know what I do!' I put him down in front of the television and he watched it, and he got very engrossed.... when it came to the very end of the film, and she said goodbye to her friend at the train station, he was just pouring tears. Pouring tears. He said, 'She had to say goodbye to her friend'.... He didn't understand the romantic thing – but he understood."
