4. Patrick L722

By Tommy Kronkvist

Patrick was trained by Gunnery Sergeant Kris Knight, known as "Gunny," who said the dog was all over the place when he first arrived. "But he showed the potential to be great," Knight said. The dog served with the II Marine Expeditionary Force and was sent to Afghanistan. Patrick was killed during his time there, but saved the lives of the soldiers he was working with thanks to his skill at detecting bombs. "I lost my best friend," Patrick's handler, Corporal Charles "Cody" Haliscak, said. "He was my hero. Without him and his great ability to work off leash, I'd be toast."
