3. 'Half-Blood Blues,' by Esi Edugyan

A Man Booker Prize finalist for 2011, here novelist Esi Edugyan weaves the story of Hiero Falk, a black German trumpet prodigy who is arrested by the Nazis in Paris in 1939. Years later, two of Hiero's fellow musicians – one of whom is suspected of having a hand in the trumpet player's disappearance – go to Berlin to see a documentary about Hiero, even as an odd letter reveals more of the story.
