One elderly villager in a town in Yucatán recalled getting up to hunt with her father, then coming home and helping her mother prepare dinner as well as other chores. She also helped chop firewood for others and earned a small amount of money for it, which she was happy to contribute to the meager household income. Today, in a village in another village in Yucatán, children who are two or three help with tasks like washing clothes or feeding the chickens. One researcher noted how the Maya, in trusting children with some jobs, are available to their children for help but also give them leeway to make mistakes – and learn from them – as they do their chores.
