In October 1774, a woman named Penelope Barker living in the North Carolina town invited 51 other women to a friend's house and had them all sign a document saying that they would not drink tea until "all Acts which tend to enslave this our Native Country shall be repealed." Barker did this despite the fact that her husband worked for the North Carolina government and was often in London.
