Carson remembers a 1981 game against the Eagles as his worst ever. He was so demoralized by his own play that that day that after the game he told Coach Ray Perkins that he was thinking of retiring. Perkins, however, said that rather than acting rashly that Carson should consider meeting with him the next day.
Carson took along his 2-1/2 year old daughter, Aja, as a calming influence and was talked out of calling it a career. But he did return his game check, an act that flabbergasted his teammates. “I know most players wouldn’t think twice about taking the check,” he writes, “but my basic foundation would not allow me to do so.”
