Carson had what he called a “nice little two-year run” as a part owner, with several former Giant teammates, of the New Jersey Red Dogs, an Arena Football League franchise that played at Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands.
The experience was eye-opening, partly because of the ego-gratifying enjoyment it provided. Carson liked thinking that he was offering a fan-friendly product to people who might not be able to afford to attend NFL games. But the flip side was that Carson grew conflicted about supporting a sport that could take such a heavy physical toll on the athletes, especially in a league in which players could slam into the dasher boards.
“It stopped being fun to go to games and seeing these guys almost knock their brains out,” Carson writes. The team was sold and today is the Cleveland Gladiators.
