3. Close encounter with Howard Cosell

As a rookie, Carson happened upon broadcaster Howard Cosell in a Pittsburgh hotel lobby while both were in town for a Monday Night Football game. It was a highly encouraging encounter because, before Carson could introduce himself to Cosell, the famous sports commentator blurted out, “Harry Carson from little South Carolina State College. Some doubt his ability to play middle linebacker, but I say he will probably become one of the best to ever play the game!” 

Carson said that meant more to him “than anyone will ever know." Not only was he impressed that Cosell recognized him, but he was also gratified to know that inside sources had apparently told Cosell that Carson was an up-and-comer.
