In 'The Giver,' Lois Lowry creates a dystopian society disguised as a utopia. The veil is lifted through the eyes of young Jonas, appointed to be a "Reciever" – a job that allows him to be privy to the society's collective memory. Jonas soon realizes that his world is hardly as perfect as it seems, and recognizes that humanity is the first casualty when a society is engineered to avoid suffering.
