Most of eldest daughter Mary's initial resentment towards her relative Matthew is that he now stands to inherit the family's estate despite being only a distant cousin to her father. "Mary feels she should have been a boy," says actress Michelle Dockery, who plays Robert's oldest child. "And then everything would have been so much easier. She fights against her femininity in a way."
