8. 'Sick Puppy,' by Carl Hiassen

South Florida is the backdrop for Carl Hiassen’s quirky novel, in which his protagonist is a determined eco-terrorist named Twilly Spree. Twilly takes on a gang of powerful allies surreptitiously seeking to develop a state wildlife sanctuary. In order to expose this corruption, Hiassen has Tilly go to ridiculous lengths – dog-napping, planting dung beetles, and destroying taxidermy.
