The author of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" was in high school when he submitted a paper on "Macbeth" to an English teacher named Mr. Criche. When he got it back, Criche had written under the grade, "Sure hope you become a writer." "It was the first time anyone had indicated in any way that writing was a career option for me," Eggers wrote. "Even when I was discouraged by some instructors in college, Mr. Criche's words always came back to me and gave me strength."
