6. Sometimes it was easier to go along with the other servants

Powell writes that at other houses she later worked at, she would sometimes go along with comments from the other servants even if she didn't agree with them. "I did stand for lots of things I didn't like later on when I was in service," she writes. "If you didn't do them they thought you were stuck up, and after all you had to work with the servants. Not only work with them, you had to live with them.... [I]t was up to you to keep on good terms with them. They were your whole life."
