POEMS OF AUTUMN

In women who carry baskets there is always something of grace, a music in their movements, a serenity in their face as though they knew the fullness of life is theirs to glean from bin and field and garden and all the trees between.

The women with hoes in the valley, the women with scythes on the hill strive to tie earth to heaven as they work with a vigorous will, but the women who carry baskets walk lightly on the sod and come to gather the harvest with the confidence of God.
