The United Automobile Workers' convention defeated an attempt to force direct elections by the rank and file. Many delegates said they were swayed by President Douglas Fraser's tearful farewell speech. The current system, by which a 26-member executive board elects officers, was unsuccessfully challenged by union members unhappy with concessions granted automakers in recent years.
