A relieved Fort Wayne begins flood recovery

After a week of battling flood waters from its three swollen rivers, Fort Wayne, Ind., begins its recovery efforts, reports Monitor staff writer Laurent Belsie. President Reagan declared the city a disaster area, providing federal funds for low-cost business loans and repair of public facilities, as well as temporary shelter for evacuees.

Damage to the city and surrounding area is estimated at $20 million. The figure would have gone even higher without the efforts of thousands of volunteers, including schoolchildren.
