South Africa's young, well-educated Afrikaners now favor a national convention where all race groups would meet to negotiate a system of power sharing.

That's the finding of a new survey of students at South Africa's University of Stellenbosch - considered the country's leading Afrikaans university and a training ground for top government leaders. The survey also found that support for the government's limited power-sharing plan - which would include Indians and Coloreds in a political system but exclude blacks - had dwindled by half between 1978 and 1981.

The ruling National Party will no doubt take note. This is the approach already urged by the opposition Progressive Federal Party.
