Leadership training and communications skills are the two most important needs of today's youth, says the high school student who was named this nation's outstanding future leader.
Monitor staff writer Jim Bencivenga reports that Kenneth Klemm, a senior at Butler High School in Butler, N.J., was given the award by Century III Leaders, a program sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals for high school seniors from every state and the District of Columbia. Winners are selected for their involvement in school and community activities, their written assessment of the major challenge confronting the United States in the 21st century, and their suggested solutions to that challenge.
All 102 participants, selected from 300,000 students nationwide, receive a $1 ,500 scholarship. The first-place winner is awarded an additional $10,000.
